Traveling with kids

I've done it before. Quite a few times, in fact. But I still get nervous!! We are taking our 3 cute munchkins to Puerto Rico! I am nervous! It will be fun.... and beautiful... and warm... and tiring! I just hope they can all stay happy, especially for the travel time.

They each have their own seat on the plane, so hopefully the extra room will help. I am trying to think of activities they can do that will keep them happy. Any ideas? We decided *not* to bring our DVD. It is so big and bulky, and the battery only lasts 10 minutes. Are we crazy? Should we get a new battery?

I plan to make a trip to the dollar store and grab some things that will be new for them. Any specific ideas? Any good snacks that will be low in sugar + filling + the kids will eat it? :)

I'm not calling it a 'vacation'. There will be no resting or relaxing! But it will be a fun trip! If only I could calm my nerves!

That sounds like a lot of fun! On the DVD, I think it depends on whether the stuff you would take in its place will take up more room, or less, and on how interested you think they would be in it on a plane, anyway. Also, will the plane be offering an entirely different (and potentially inappropriate) movie that they will need to be distracted from? Would you use it in a hotel room as an end-of-day calming device?

If it were me, I would invest in a new, smaller DVD player. One that you can enjoy taking along on your many excursions. Yes, it will be extra money to spend, but I don't think you can put a price on keeping your sanity while on a trip. It will be money well spent.

As for other things to keep them occupied. My kids love Magna Doodles. They have them in travel sizes. Good luck!

I was thinking the same thing about a new DVD. By the time I bought a new battery, I should probably just buy a new player. We'll have to see what Kydon says.... :)

How did you guys get so lucky to go to PR? I am dreamy of somewhere warm and sunny instead of gray and cold. When do you go?

On thing that my kids LOVE is thier Leapster handheld games. At first I thought they would be too advanced especially for Adia, but they have different levels, and both of my kids figured it out so fast. My parents live six hours away, and we make the trip at least once a month. We also drive the 14 hours to visit the kid's Bio family 2 times a year. These are a lifesaver. They like them better than the DVD player, they are compact, and they work with headphones so mom and dad don't have to hear anything!!! They are kind of expensive, but three of them would be less than a new dvd player, and if you go to leapfrog.com you can usually get a good deal on them. Seriously, I swear by these. Leapfrog also has some similar toys made for younger kids that also work with headphones, so maybe just go check them all out. As far as snacks we do dehydrated friut a lot on trips. It's relatively little mess, and really easy to pack.

Sarah- we are going as part of the pre-wedding celebration with Dane and Laura! We probably won't do much with them, since they will be with the young-and-single crowd, up at 2pm and get to bed by 3 am, and we will be more the married-with-3-crazy-kids crowd, up at 5 am and to bed by 8 pm. But we are going anyway, and it will be fun! Or at least warm, which is reason enough to go! :)

Katie,
That is an excellent idea about the leapster! I have been looking at them all afternoon, and I think we might get them. I might have to trick Kydon somehow to get him to agree, but it looks like they would be great! Thanks for the tip!

I came back to your blog today to see what others had recommended (and truthfully, I check your blog a couple of times a day anyway) and I really like the Leapster idea as well. My nieces have them and they love them!
So jealous you get to go to PR!!! I've never been so take lots of pictures for us.

Leapsters are great. Maybe you could borrow one from someone for a test run to make sure your kids will like them. If you get one, the games are expensive. YOu can check them out at the library. They usually have a lot. I'd do a Leapster instead of DVD. You can use it later.

Hi, this is Cort's wife (one of your many cousin in laws!) anyway, whenever I travel with Metz I take one of his little puzzles photocopy the box, put the pieces in a sandwhich bag with the copied picture and he loves it. Or I buy a really small puzzle at the dollar store and do the same thing. anyway, it helps keep him occupied for awhile. Good luck on your travels - PR IS BEAUTIFUL!!!

Shanna, I recind(?) my earlier statement. New dvd player with earphones. You'll be the happiest mom in the world. BTW, we love leapsters, we also have a handheld vsmile, similar idea. Such a great idea, also with the headphones, voila! Happy children!!
