Understanding Adoption

The other day we were driving in the car. I was taking Jack and Aidan to sign them up for preschool. I told them that I didn't want to- that I was hoping they would just stay small.

They informed me that they were growing bigger and bigger every day, and they were BIG BOYS, and were NOT small.

I then told them how sad I would be not to have any little kids in my house, because if they grew bigger, I would miss my little boys and will they just stay small pleeeeeeaaaaasssseeeee???

Jack then said 'Mommy, member dat lady? She grow another baby and give it to you and den you have a baby and we can get bigger.' I can only assume 'dat lady' is their birthmom! I guess they do understand how it works!!

And ever since my sister had her baby, Abigail has been adamant that she will NOT have any babies- it hurts too much! I asked her if she would be sad to be a grown up and not have any babies, and she responded "I will just have someone else have them for me".

She gets it too. :)

Caroline feels the same as Abigail--she doesn't like needles so she said that instead of having babies she will just adopt them. I told her it was fun to have a baby and she told me it didn't look fun :)

Maddie has always said the same thing about having babies--she has no desire to have any. Too funny! She said she wanted to "dopt babies." :)

That is cute. I think it is smart to just have that be part of their lives and be natural for them to know. I have a friend whose parents didn't tell her until she was 16!! Are you kidding me? It caused all kinds of problems. You're lucky to have such great kids!!

If only adoption were as easy as all that... lol!

I've been talking a lot to Dallin about pregnancy and birth lately, and we were looking in a book that showed pictures of women in labor. I was telling him that it hurt a lot to give birth. He looked at me and said, "Gee, Mom, it's a good thing you didn't have to do that, huh?"

It was funny and innocent and cute, but I couldn't help but think that he had absolutely no clue the pain that not being able to give birth had caused me. And I hope to keep it that way for a long time! :)

SO funny! Right after we moved to FL the boys were talking about Jack & Aidan and how they were only a little older than Zack. Suddenly, Mark said "but Mommy, how come her tummy didn't get big. Your tummy got big." I explained adoption to him and he was very interested. I felt really great about how the whole conversation went and he then said "I wish I was adopted."

Gee thanks bud. :) They really do say the funniest stuff! I'm glad they understand so well at such a young age. You are awesome!

I like when Abigail asked me if I was going to have another baby or if I was going to adopt one. When I told her I would grow one in my tummy she looked at me kind of funny and said, "Why? I think you should adopt one! Growing babies hurts too much. I am going to find someone to grow my babies for me."

Smart kids. Sounds like you have explained it well to your kids. I remember showing my toddler niece a picture of her mommy pregnant with her. She started to cry and asked why her mommy ate her. :) Oops!

I think that is so cute! If the process was just that easy...that would be awesome! I would have someone grow another one for me too :)!!!

I kinda wish someone was growing this one for me right now. ;o)

...and I like Jack's idea of you finding someone to grow you another baby so they can grow up and you'll still have a baby at home. Great idea!

That is so cute!!

I always tell my girls that some people's babies come from their tummies and some come from an airplane. (Doesn't TOTALLY cover all aspects of adoption, but the adopted babies we know came via airplane from various places.) My youngest will not be able to have kids and she thinks she is very cool - getting her future babies from an airplane!
